Committee Meetings

The Committee on Pedestrian & Traffic Safety meets on a monthly basis at City Hall (121 N LaSalle). During committee meetings, routine sign ordinances are passed and substantial legislation is considered. There are also occasions when the committee holds a subject matter hearing to take a deeper dive into a particular issue, policy or city department. To view upcoming committee meeting dates, notices, and agendas, please visit the City Clerk’s website and filter for the Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety.

The next Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety meeting is on June 5, 2024. The deadline to submit written public comment is 12:00pm, Monday, June 3, 2024. Please see below for instructions on providing written public comment.

Attending a Meeting

Committee meetings are open to the public. Meetings typically take place in City Council Chambers located on the second floor of City Hall. Live meetings are also streamed via the City Clerk’s website. Please note that in-person attendees may be subject to search by police officers and the following items are prohibited:

  • Banners, flyers, or signage

  • Backpacks, large bags, and sharp objects (clear bags, not tinted in color, that do not exceed 12”x6”x12” will be permitted)

  • Food and beverages, including in metal canisters.

If you are concerned about in-person access to committee meetings, please reach out to committee staff in advance.

Providing Public Comment:
Public Comment is at the beginning of the meeting and lasts for a maximum of 30 minutes. Typically each person is given three minutes to speak, but that is at the discretion of the committee chair. Residents can give Public Comment in 3 ways:

  1. In-person

    1. Please enter City Hall from W. Washington St. to fill out a form provided by the Sergeant-at-Arms. Five speakers will be randomly selected to speak.

  2. Virtually during the meeting

    1. Persons wishing to comment at a City Council committee meeting conducted by videoconference shall call (312) 744-6800 and leave a voice message with their name and telephone number. Requests to comment will be accepted from 10:00 AM two business days before the scheduled meeting until 9:00 AM the business day before the scheduled meeting. Any individual wishing to participate must be available at the scheduled start time of the committee meeting and have access to a touch-tone telephone.

    2. After 9:00 AM on the business day before the scheduled meeting, the Sergeant-at-Arms will compile a list of names and telephone numbers of those who wish to participate and assign each person a number. The order of participants will be determined by a random draw that the Sergeant-at-Arms conducts from the assigned numbers.

    3. Between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM on the business day before the scheduled meeting, the Sergeant-at-Arms will contact each selected participant at the telephone number provided, and give them instructions to access the meeting, including a telephone number and passcode. The Sergeant-at-Arms will only make one attempt to call the selected participant; if there is no live response, the selection is forfeited, and the Sergeant-at-Arms will move on the next selected participant

    4. At the scheduled start time on the day of the meeting, selected participants must call into the meeting from the telephone number they originally provided to the City and wait to be called upon to speak.

  3. Written

    1. Written Public Comment can be submitted to committeeonpedestrianandtrafficsafety@cityofchicago.org

    2. The deadline for written public comment is set in the meeting notice that can be found at https://chicityclerkelms.chicago.gov/Meetings/. The deadline is set to ensure enough time to distribute written public comment to committee members with sufficient time to read the comments ahead of the meeting; written comment provided after that set deadline will still be sent to committee members but it cannot be ensured they will receive it prior to the meeting.
