Project Sidewalk is a free, online tool developed by UIC and private partners that allows users to label sidewalk infrastructure and identify accessibility barriers by visually walking/rolling through city streets using Google Street View imagery. Project Sidewalk is a crowdsourcing platform that community members can voluntarily participate in to map out sidewalk conditions and accessibility concerns.

Project Sidewalk data is open source that can be utilized to identify specific sidewalks that are in need of repair, along with broader trends in sidewalk conditions throughout Chicago.

The Project Sidewalk team collaborates with community groups, ward offices, youth organizations and civic volunteer programs to put on “map-a-thon” events where they teach community members how to use the sidewalk mapping tool and equips individuals with knowledge on urban accessibility, built urban environments, and data collection.
