Parkway Trees
This page allows you to request a free tree to be planted in your parkway by the Bureau of Forestry (BoF). If you received a flyer with a QR code directing you here, your street has been surveyed and your address has been identified as a good contender for a tree in the parkway in front of, or on the side of your home. If you’re interested in moving forward with this free tree planting service, please complete the form below.
But first…what is a parkway?
The “parkway” is the grassy area between the sidewalk in front of your home and the curb. While this area is city property, many residents choose to beautify this area with flowers or fencing (please note that the city is not liable for any damage that occurs to the parkway during construction). See some examples of standard parkways below.
How the Process Works
You fill out our form to request a free parkway tree.
We expedite your request with the BoF. You will receive a personalized request code you may track on the 311 website or app.
BoF will confirm your address meets the requirements for planting to best ensure survival of your tree.
Your tree will then be planted by a city contractor. Once the tree is planted, it has a 2-year warranty (so long as the tree is not tampered with aside from common care practices like watering and mulching).
Benefits of Parkway Trees
Potential Concerns
Obstruction to utilities
The Bureau of Forestry does in-depth surveying to ensure any tree planted in the public right of way is an appropriate distance from utility lines below or above ground
If you are still concerned about utilities, certified city foresters recommend a smaller, ornamental tree with less invasive roots. You can make this request in your tree planting request.
Maintenance
If the time commitment to foliage maintenance concerns you, trees with simple leaves that are easier to collect are recommended. We suggest staying away from Kentucky coffeetrees and Honey locusts.

Watering!
The name of the game is: Deep, infrequent waterings. Conducive root growth depends on wet and dry periods
Recommended watering practices: Turn the hose to a slow trickle and place it on the mulch ring for 30-40 minutes. Repeat this step once every 10-14 days (more frequently during periods of drought)
Gator Bags are also a great tool for watering new trees and be purchased at hardware/landscaping stores for around $15-30.
